Brick as Memory

Learning Collaboration Through Community

“I never knew about the history of this campus – I wish more people had access to this information” was the consensus from the students of Social Geography. They created the Brick as Memory student website to provide the valuable information about the Black brick and stone masons that built the campus’ architecture, and expand the conversation beyond the bounds of the classroom.

Once the students and Eclipse Cohort members had come to the collective decision to create the Old Well Sound Walk, they realized that they needed a way to communicate what the Sound Walk was and why it mattered to those who might witness it. A website with a corresponding QR code posted in high traffic areas around the Old Well invited those who participated in the Old Well Sound Walk to learn more about the practice and the group of people who created it.

The students spent the last several weeks of the course discussing what the website would offer and why certain information should be included.  After much careful conversation and divvying up of labor, the students created Brick As Memory—complete with contextual information about the project and collaborators, and a page that described the class in detail while linking out to class-made resources.
