Material Histories and the Memorial Landscape of UNC-Chapel Hill

This lesson plan was inspired by my own research into public monuments, the counter-monument movement, and the commemoration of enslavement, as well as other UNC projects such as Black and Carolina Blue Tour and Names in Brick and Stone. This plan engages students in close-looking techniques and material and visual analysis of public monuments on UNC’s campus. The associated readings and exercises invite conversation and reflection around memory, remembrance, archival or historical exclusion, and the role of art in public discourse.
